Xiaomi’s First Electric Car Sparks Demand, Delays Deliveries

02.05.2025

Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi has reported unexpectedly strong demand for its first-ever electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan. The company has informed customers that delivery times could range from four to seven months, depending on the model, due to overwhelming order volumes.

Xiaomi officially opened orders for the SU7 on Thursday, and within just 24 hours, pre-orders had reached nearly 89,000 units. The entry-level SU7 is priced at 215,900 yuan (approximately $29,870), with estimated delivery times of 18 to 21 weeks. The SU7 Pro version has a similar waiting period, while the top-tier model, priced at 299,900 yuan, may take 27 to 30 weeks to deliver.

The vehicle has drawn considerable attention for its sporty design, which some observers have likened to Porsche’s Taycan and Panamera models. Its launch comes at a time of intense competition in China’s electric vehicle market, where over 40 brands are fighting for market share through aggressive pricing and incentives.

Despite the challenging environment, analysts believe Xiaomi holds a competitive edge over many newer EV startups. The company’s deep financial resources, combined with its technological know-how from the smartphone sector, position it to offer advanced features like intelligent dashboards—an increasingly important selling point for Chinese consumers.

To further boost initial interest, Xiaomi introduced a limited “Founder’s Edition” of the SU7, which included exclusive gifts such as compact refrigerators. The first 5,000 units of this edition sold out almost immediately. A second round has been launched, although the company has not yet disclosed how many more will be made available.
