Opera Mini Gets Smarter with Integration of Aria AI Assistant

16.04.2025

Norway-based browser company Opera has announced the integration of its AI assistant, Aria, into the Android version of Opera Mini. This update aims to bring AI capabilities to users with low-end devices and limited data access, especially in emerging markets.

Aria can assist users with a range of tasks, including providing up-to-date news, answering questions across various topics, and even generating images. The assistant is powered by a combination of AI models developed by OpenAI and Google, ensuring accurate and relevant responses.

Jørgen Arnesen, EVP of Mobile at Opera, emphasized the growing importance of AI in daily internet use. “Bringing Aria to Opera Mini is a natural step. We’re excited to see how it enhances the browser experience for our users,” he said in a statement.

Despite adding AI functionality, Opera claims the update won’t increase the app’s size or data usage. Opera Mini has long been known for its data-saving features and partnerships with telecom providers in Africa to offer free browsing, although some programs—like the one in Kenya—have faced regulatory challenges.

Opera Mini has been downloaded over a billion times on Android and currently serves more than 100 million users worldwide. This year alone, it has seen 7.1 million new downloads, according to analytics firm Appfigures.
