On April 28, OpenAI announced an update to ChatGPT’s web search capabilities, aiming to enhance the online shopping experience. The new functionality offers users personalized product recommendations with images, customer reviews, and direct purchase links, making ChatGPT more useful for shoppers looking for tailored suggestions.

These updates are integrated into OpenAI’s default model, GPT-4o, and are available to all ChatGPT users globally. This includes those on Free, Plus, and Pro plans, as well as individuals using the service without signing in. When users ask specific shopping-related questions, the model will provide suggestions across categories such as fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics.

OpenAI clarified that the recommendations will be ad-free, and the company will not receive commissions from any purchases made through ChatGPT. This ensures that suggestions are unbiased and based solely on user needs rather than promotional incentives.

The shopping results are generated using structured metadata from third-party sources. This includes up-to-date pricing, product descriptions, and reviews, which help the AI deliver relevant and reliable product information.

The search function, introduced last year, has rapidly gained popularity. OpenAI reported that over one billion searches were made through ChatGPT in the past week alone, reflecting the growing demand for AI-assisted search and shopping tools.
