OpenAI Embraces Anthropic’s Standard for AI Model Data Integration

27.03.2025

OpenAI is adopting Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a standard for integrating AI assistants with external data sources. This open-source protocol enables AI models to access relevant information from business tools, software platforms, and content repositories, improving their ability to generate accurate responses.

In an announcement on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that MCP support will be integrated across OpenAI’s products, including the ChatGPT desktop app. The protocol is already available in the Agents SDK, with future support planned for the ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API.

MCP facilitates seamless connections between AI-powered applications and external data sources. Developers can create MCP servers to expose data and build MCP clients—such as apps and workflows—that interact with these servers on demand. Since its launch, companies like Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph have integrated MCP into their platforms.

Anthropic’s chief product officer, Mike Krieger, welcomed OpenAI’s adoption of MCP, emphasizing its rapid growth as an open standard with thousands of integrations. He highlighted the protocol’s ability to make AI models more effective by connecting them to existing data and software.

OpenAI plans to provide further details on its MCP implementation in the coming months, signaling broader adoption of the protocol across AI ecosystems.
