With the iPhone 16 series launching later today, Apple is preparing to introduce its first generation of smartphones designed to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI). Central to this release is Apple Intelligence, the company’s proprietary suite of AI-driven features, expected to be the defining aspect of the new iPhone models. These innovations were first previewed in June at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), alongside the announcement of iOS 18, the latest operating system for iPhones.
Apple Intelligence will bring several generative AI tools designed to assist with text-based content across native apps on compatible iPhones. Users will be able to take advantage of features like Proofread, Rewrite, and Summarize, which will be integrated into apps like Notes, Mail, and Messages. In addition, Smart Reply will generate context-aware responses in Messages and Mail, analyzing the conversation or email and suggesting suitable replies.
Another standout feature is Notification Summary, which uses AI to condense notifications from multiple apps into concise summaries. This tool won’t be limited to native apps; users will have the option to enable it for third-party applications as well. Similarly, the Webpage Summary feature in Safari will allow users to quickly grasp the essence of a webpage by offering a brief overview of the content.
The Photos app will also benefit from AI-powered tools, including a Clean-Up feature that lets users remove unwanted objects from their images, with the background intelligently filled in by AI. Moreover, the new Movie Memory feature will allow users to generate short videos from their existing photos and videos by simply providing a short text description. AI will also enhance the search functionality within Photos, making it easier to find specific moments by analyzing and recognizing details within the images.
Apple Intelligence will also introduce Genmoji, which enables users to create custom emojis directly from their keyboards. By describing the desired emoji, AI generates multiple versions for users to choose from. Additionally, Image Playground, an AI image generation tool, will let users create custom images based on text prompts. This feature will be available in native apps like Notes and as a standalone app.
Siri will see significant improvements through Apple Intelligence, gaining more advanced natural language processing capabilities. This will allow Siri to engage in more human-like conversations and handle complex in-app tasks. Furthermore, Apple is integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into iOS 18 for compatible devices. Users will soon be able to send complex queries to the AI chatbot via Siri, with system-wide ChatGPT integration providing assistance across native applications.
