Huawei’s new homegrown Chinese smartphone takes on Apple and Android

Huawei has introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the Mate 70, equipped with the HarmonyOS Next operating system. This marks a significant shift as the device no longer supports Android-based apps, emphasizing Huawei’s effort to create a fully homegrown alternative to Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Priced at 5,499 yuan ($760), the Mate 70 reflects Huawei’s determination to overcome sanctions and showcase its technological independence.

The launch of the Mate 70 builds on the success of last year’s Mate 60 series, which surprised industry experts by incorporating advanced chip technology despite U.S. restrictions on semiconductor exports to China. According to Huawei executives, this device represents a major milestone in its software development journey, setting the stage for all future smartphones and tablets to run exclusively on HarmonyOS.

The decision to part ways with Android is seen as a critical move for Huawei to maintain its momentum in the premium smartphone market. Industry analysts believe the shift will help solidify consumer loyalty and attract users from rival platforms. Huawei’s growing market share in the high-end segment, rising from 11% to 33% in a year, underscores the success of its strategy, particularly as Apple’s share has declined in the same period.

Since the U.S. imposed trade restrictions in 2019, Huawei has worked to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. The HarmonyOS platform aims to become the world’s third major mobile operating system, alongside iOS and Android. With significant investments in app development, Huawei plans to onboard 100,000 compatible applications within the next year, beginning in China and gradually expanding globally.

Huawei’s renewed focus on innovation has led to record-breaking pre-orders for the Mate 70, signaling strong consumer interest. However, analysts note that building a competitive ecosystem will require time and extensive collaboration with developers. For Huawei, the success of HarmonyOS hinges on user adoption and the availability of a robust app ecosystem.
