Google Patches AI Glitch That Mistakenly Claimed the Year Is 2024

30.05.2025

Google’s AI Overviews, designed to help users with tasks like research, coding, and writing, recently stumbled on a surprisingly basic question: what year it is. Over the past few days, multiple users reported that the feature incorrectly stated the current year as 2024 instead of 2025.

The issue persisted until Thursday morning, when even this reporter received the wrong date in response to a similar query. Google addressed the bug later that day.

When asked for an explanation, Google didn’t provide specific details, only stating that improvements are constantly being made to ensure accuracy. A spokesperson emphasized that while most AI Overviews are helpful, the company uses such errors to refine its systems.

This isn’t the first time AI Overviews have produced odd or incorrect answers. Previous responses included suggesting eating rocks for minerals and using glue to help cheese stick to pizza—examples that drew widespread criticism.

Despite these errors, Google continues to promote AI Overviews heavily. CEO Sundar Pichai recently shared that the feature now serves 1.5 billion users across 100+ countries, contributing to over 10% of search usage in key markets like the U.S. and India.
